A wide variety of plants have been known for their medicinal properties throughout human existence and many continue to be the foundation for medicines today. Essential oils are the aromatic, volatile substances extracted from wild or cultivated plant material. Distillation of plants to extract essential oils has been practised since the 3rd century BC, making available all the aromatic and therapeutic properties of plants in a concentrated and convenient form. There are well over 200 different essential oils being produced today, although the most popular are those that work on many different levels (mind, body, emotions, spirit) in line with the holistic approach. It cannot be coincidence that many of the most beneficial essential oils also have a most delightful smell.
