What are Chakras?

Einstein showed that everything is composed of energy, i.e. tiny vibrating particles of matter. We know that the human body is no exception – it is a conductor of energy with its own energy system. According to many ancient traditions this includes a series of energy lines, auric fields and energy points or chakras (an Indian Yogic term meaning “wheel”). Chakras are whirlpools of energy formed throughout the body where the universal and earthly energy flows meet and act as a kind of sensitive filter system.

There are hundreds of chakras of varying sizes throughout the body, many of which correlate to acupuncture points. However, it is usual to focus mainly on the seven “major” chakras that are situated from the perineum along the spinal column to the top of the head. These chakras are intensely powerful, each vibrating at different rates and frequencies and relating to specific areas of our lives, emotions, psychological, physiological and spiritual make-up.

Our energy system is constantly striving to be in a state of balance. However, stagnation and blockages can occur throughout our lives as a result of our own negative experiences, conditioning and beliefs. Over time, these blockages can lead to physical ailments. Fortunately, it is possible to counteract this negative build-up by working consciously to clear and revitalise our own systems.

By consciously working with resonant or complimentary vibrational frequencies associated with each major chakra (e.g. colour, sound, positive affirmations and visualisations, crystals, essential oils, etc.), we can begin to recognise and understand our negative behaviour and belief patterns and work towards balancing our energetic flow to promote stability, vitality, health and happiness.
