Acupuncture

(Traditional Chinese Medicine)

With Jane Marsh*

Acupuncture based on Traditional Chinese Medicine is one of the many forms of acupuncture that has been developed and refined in the Far East for over 2,500 years. It takes a holisitc approach and is as much about maintenance of health as it is about management of disease. Western or Medical Acupuncture (used by doctors and physiotherapists) is a more recent development and uses acupuncture techniques after a western medical diagnosis. Traditional Chinese Medicine works with the philosophy that the body’s motivating energy – known as Qi – circulates around the body via a network of channels. The free and harmonious flow of Qi can be disturbed by different factors; physical, emotional or environmental, causing ill-health. Such factors can include stress, diet, climatic conditions, trauma, infection and many more.

During the consultation, a traditional diagnosis will be made about the nature of the disharmony and an individual treatment plan will be created. The Qi can then be accessed using fine needles inserted into the channels just under the skin to restore the body’s natural balance and feeling of wellbeing. Treatment can sometimes include massage, cupping or the burning of a traditional herb known as moxibustion.

Conditions for which acupuncture can be useful include:

Muscle & Joint Pain, Headaches & Migraines, Menopausal Symptoms,

Menstrual Problems, Poor Energy, Stress & Anxiety, Pregnancy-related conditions,

Digestive Problems, Insomnia, And Many More ....
